Read the August El Palo Magazine

I write not knowing what freedoms and restrictions we will be living with this August. One thing I think I do know is that August, historically, is often a time when end of summer boredom sets in. I imagine that will be no different this year. Opportunities to be out and about recreating and socializing, limited as they are, what are we to do with ourselves?

If you are willing to sit with boredom long enough, not distracting yourself with some electronic (or other) stimulation, it can turn out to be a natural opening to creativity. Regardless of age, we all have some creative spark inside. Sometimes it helps to have a focus, so you might wonder, “What have I learned this season?” That’s like a strike of the match for your creative spark. It can be what you have learned about anything – yourself, your family, your community, history, nature, sports, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Once you have found your focus, ask yourself, “How can I express that?” Paint a rock, write a poem, chalk art your message on the sidewalk, write a song, create a dance, make a meal (or a dessert) for your family, write a story, tell a story, create a game, draw a picture, make a graphic novel, make a video to post on Tik-Tok, add to this list with your own ideas.

Choose one and begin, that’s like turning your spark into light. If it doesn’t go quite as expected, take a break, adapt your plan, see what happens. The beauty of your creative expression is that you cannot get it wrong and you only have to share it as you choose. We would be happy if you shared it with us @ berksteensmatter.org

Despierta tu creatividad
